Pictures of Matchstick Men

Inspired by both the song by The Status Quo (January 1968) and the artist’s memory of meeting famous artist L.S. Lowry, this original was created by Paul F Bennett in 2018.

Paul says:

“Francis Rossi allegedly wrote most of this song whilst in the smallest room of his flat. It was a good move as it provided The Quo with their very first top ten hit, reaching number 8 in the January of 1968. It was the start of a very long career. However, by this time Laurence Stephen Lowry was drawing towards the close of his, but still very much painting his pictures of matchstick men.

Camper Van Beethoven took the song all the way to number 1 in the US in 1989.”

This pencil and watercolour illustration is available as a framed limited edition of only 25, signed and numbered by the artist P F Bennett.

You may notice the influence of L.S Lowry in other works created by Bennett.
